Barebones 2001

Orienteering in south-eastern BC, June 29th – July 2nd

This year we are packing the Canada Day long weekend full with five events in four days in the bottom right-hand corner of British Columbia. Orienteers and adventure racers of all experience levels are invited to join us for the sixth Barebones festival that is guaranteed as always to be an exciting, challenging, and fun gathering of old and new friends.

Barebones 2001 Festival At A Glance

>         This weekend starts with a long yet serene drive through the Rocky Mountains to Cranbrook; a nice drive that will be well rewarded. The orienteering begins on Friday evening at Wasa Lake with The Setup, part one of the two-part Barebones Chase. A short fast race with expected winning times of thirty minutes. After the race we drive to the group accommodation and event center at the College of the Rockies in the city of Cranbrook where both indoor accommodation (with beds and showers!) and limited camping are available. All of Saturday and Sunday’s events are at the event center.

>         Saturday morning is The Chase, part two of the Barebones Chase. Start times are calculated so that the first one across the finish line is the winner of the two-event total-time Barebones Chase. In the early afternoon, following a brief intermission for food and rest, is the Inter-Club Relay for teams of four. Saturday night is devoted to socializing at the Barebones Feast.

>         Sunday is the Enduro adventure race. We’ll start early in the morning and finish by mid afternoon. The course is designed to be fun and to challenge your versatility with a wide variety of navigational tools including orienteering maps, topo maps, sketch maps, and air photos. Visiting control sites is optional, but you score points for each control you do visit. Sunday night we’ll join in Cranbook’s Canada Day celebrations, which are conveniently held at the event center. Fireworks, music, games, entertainment, and hundreds of fun-seekers.

>         Monday morning we hop in the cars again and drive back to Wasa Lake for the Classic point-to-point orienteering race. An early start time and exceptionally quick awards so everyone can have a splash in the lake or stop at a hot springs and be on the road to make it home before sunset.

Beginners Welcome

If you're curious about orienteering or if you want a chance to test and improve your navigation skills then the Barebones Festival is just the thing for you. Take part in as many events as you wish. Each event will have courses to challenge all levels from beginners to advanced, and the emphasis is Olympically not on the winning but on the taking part. Lots of events, lots of friendly ‘”experts” to help you out, tons of magnificent scenery - the Barebones weekend is the ideal way to develop your navigation talent, test your fitness, explore the beautiful East Kootenays, meet new people, and thoroughly enjoy yourself.

Junior Training Camp, July 2nd – 5th

The Western Junior Training Camp for ages 10-18 will be held in Cranbrook in the week following Barebones. Like Barebones it will be based at the College of the Rockies and will use the same maps. Control Pickup

For those who can spare the time, we’d really appreciate help with picking up controls – please see Adrian or Richard.

Accommodation and Event Center

·       The event center and group accommodation is at Purcell House, the student housing at the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook (www.cotr.bc.ca). Both hostel-style indoor accommodation and limited camping is available. Purcell House is the site of all Saturday and Sunday’s events, including Saturday evening’s Barebones Feast and Cranbrook’s Canada Day Party on Sunday. It is close to Cranbrook’s new recreational center, which has the nearest swimming pool.

·       Indoor accommodation: Purcell House accommodation is arranged into ‘pods’ – each pod has six bedrooms, two showers, a kitchen, and a common area. The bedrooms have either a single or double bed. Cost per room is $15/night plus $10/night for a second person. Bedding and towels can be rented for $5.25/person for the weekend. For families, extra bedrooms for the kids can be taken at a cost of $5.00/child/night. Phone (250) 489-8282 to book your room. Please book early – space is limited.

·       Camping: Available immediately outside Purcell House, on the College’s football field. We have a small corner of the field reserved for camping. Space is limited and there are no picnic tables. Parking is nearby. Showers and toilets are also available nearby, except on Canada Day (Sunday) when the rest of the field will be in use for the Canada Day Celebrations (you’ll need to crash your friends’ indoor room, or head to the Rec. Center for a shower). Cost is about $15/night per tent, to be paid at the event. Please indicate on the registration form how many camping spots you require. Space is limited to 50 tents – first come first served. Very limited RV parking (no services) available in the parking lot – indicate on registration if you intend to bring an RV and pay at the event.

·       The closest public campsite in town is 1km away at Mount Baker campground. Phone 1-877-501-2288.

·       The event center is in the Common Room in Purcell House. Results and other information will be posted there each day.

·       Directions: In Cranbrook, follow the signs to “The College of the Rockies”. It is at the eastern end of 2nd Street North.

·       Distance from: Calgary 400km, Edmonton 680km, Spokane 306km, Vancouver 845km.

Child Care

If you require baby-sitting, please send a note with your registration giving the number and age of the children. We will try to provide childcare at the event center. $2/child/hour.

Prizes & Awards

At Barebones we don’t have much on offer other than bragging rights for a year and a quick trip to the podium for the top finishers in each category. We also have the Barebones Outstanding Performance Awards (the BOPAs), awarded based on nominations from the participants to recognize wonderful achievements that perhaps didn’t quite take someone into the medals.

Rules

Whistles are mandatory (and, as always, can be purchased at the event). All non-COF or non-USOF members must sign a Release and Indemnity form at the event site (or become members – and why not? It’s cheap & it’s easy)

Course Planning Contest

Visit our website to find out more about the Barebones 2001 Course Planning Contest. The winning entry will be used in the Classic, when the winner will pick up the map at the start and realize “hey, that’s my course – I won!”

Barebones Philosophy: We reckon that quality orienteering shouldn't need millions of organizers plus a dozen nervous breakdowns. Barebones 2001 encompasses the idea of quality orienteering with minimum organizational effort.

A Barebones’ tradition, the complainer’s fee of $15 is payable in advance by anyone who thinks they might take to whining about the organization, the courses, the map, the terrain, the weather, or anything else that will make the organizers wish they'd never put their time and energy into staging this event. Constructive commentary, as usual, is free and welcome :-)
